| Fishing |
| Mayo offers the visiting angler excellent fishing with a wide choice.
The River Moy is internationally acknowledged as an exceptional salmon fishery, producing several thousand salmon to the rod annually. Good salmon angling both on rivers and lakes, is widely available throughout the County with many famous fly fisheries such as Burrishoole, Delphi, Errif, Newport and the Owenmore/Carrowmore systems to name but a few. Brown trout fishing is widely available throughout the County and is particularly good on the Moy system which includes Lough Conn. The other great Western lakes in Mayo, Loughs Carra and Mask, also provide good brown trout fishing. Sea trout fishing is available at various locations throughout Mayo but check the latest information with the operators of these fisheries (eg Burrishoole, Newport, Delphi, Errif). Excellent sea trout fishing can be had in the Moy Estuary, Carrowmore Lake, Cloonaghmore (Palmerstown) River Estuary and the Glenamoy Estuary and River, when in spate. Coarse angling is also catered for in Mayo. Lakehill Pond, just outside Ballyhaunis, is an exceptional trench fishery. Pike angling is available on many lakes, eg Derryhick and Lavally Lakes to the South and West of Pontoon respectively. Eaton's Lake near Knock, supports good stock of bream, and fishing stands have been erected to facilitate the coarse angler.
The seas around Mayo support a wide variety of fish species which provide the sea angler with excellent fishing. The main centres catering for the sea angler in Mayo are Belmullet, Killala and Westport. Shore fishing is also widely available along the Mayo coast. |

| Mayo has some superb golf courses, ranging from 9 hole par 3 courses, to full 18 hole championship golf courses and golf links. Ballinrobe Golf Club's location on a 300 acre estate is an idyllic setting for such a magnificent championship course. The 7,100-yard, par-73, course was laid out and designed by well-known architect Eddie Hackett and the contoured greens, which are 80% sand based, are playable all year round. World renowned Irish golfer, Padraig Harrington, described Ballinrobe Golf Course as "..the finest championship golf course in the West of Ireland". Claremorris Golf Club was designed in 1927 by Tom Craddock and is situated in the heart of Ireland's West, midway between Galway and Sligo. This 18 hole parklands course is a spectacular par 73 layout measuring 6,143 metres and lies in an idyllic setting with mature oak, ash and elm trees a feature on many holes. Golfers of all abilities will enjoy this true test of golf and afterwards relax in a modern and newly refurbished clubhouse with full bar and catering facilities. Westport Golf Club is a golfing oasis in the colourful town of Westport on the west coast of Mayo. The setting is spectacular and Croagh Patrick, Ireland's holy mountain, seems to follow you everywhere on the course. The 18-hole championship course was designed by Fred Hawtree, designer of the new course at St. Andrews.Full bar and restaurant facilities are available and overlook the course. Balla Golf Club - 18 hole Par 3 is a superb 18 hole Par 3 course set in beautiful, peaceful parklands in Balla.Ballyhaunis Golf Club The 5443 metre course contains nine holes with the tees placed at different positions for the front and back nine. Castlebar Golf Club is an 18-hole parkland course with sand based greens and many water features. Course built to USGA specifications.

| Museums Of Mayo and Genealogical Service |
| The National Museum of Ireland - Country life is the latest addition to the National Museum of Ireland and is the first branch of the National Museum to be situated outside Dublin. The museum opened to the public in September 2001. The exhibitions portray the lives of ordinary people who lived in rural Ireland in the period 1850 to 1950. Emphasis is placed on the continuity of lifestyles, which were established for several hundred years and which lasted well into the 20th century. The museum is situated in the grounds of Turlough Park House a short distance from the town of Castlebar, Co. Mayo. The house has been fully restored and serves as the main office as well as the education/reception area and is used to show visitors how families like its original owners lived. Fr. Peyton Memorial Centre, AttyDivision is responsible for the care of the National Folklife Collection which comprises of over 50,000 objects. These collections reflect Irish traditional life, largely of a rural nature and include objects dealing with agriculture, fishing and hunting, clothing, architecture, vernacular furniture, trades and crafts, transport, sports and leisure and religion. Other Heritage sites in Co. Mayo include Ballintubber Abbey, Ceide Fields Visitor Centre,Clew Bay Heritage Centre, The Quay, Westport, Teach Na Miosa, Croagh Patrick, Belcarra Eviction Cottage, Foxford Woolen Mills, Ionad Deirbhile Heritage Centre , Kiltimagh Museum, Old Railway Station, Knock Folk Museum, Knock Shrine Grounds, Mayo North Heritage Centre, Enniscoe,& Partry Genealogical Service There are two "Irish Family History Foundation" centres for County Mayo and they cover genealogical information for the whole county. |

Knock Shrine & Museum: Captures the unique story of the Knock Apparition which was witnessed by fifteen people on the 21 August, 1879. From this time, Knock has grown to the status of an internationally recognised Marian Shrine.Knock Shrine is located on the N17 mid-way between Galway and Sligo. Knock Museum is situated in Knock Shrine grounds, south of the Basilica.
The Croagh Patrick Visitor Centre: Is located in Murrisk on the Pilgrim's path at the base of Croagh Patrick mountain, and opposite the National Famine Monument. Westport House, Gardens & Country Park is one of Ireland's most beautiful, privately owned, 18th century Historic Homes that is open to members of the public. It is situated in a magnificent Parkland setting, with a Lake, Terraces and Gardens overlooking Clew Bay.
